On the twelfth day of One Wicked Road Trip, we venture into Scotland
Quite possibly our favorite day of One Wicked Road Trip, we start with a scenic drive around Loch Lomond, head over to Oban for a look and taste at our favorite Scotch distillery, then cruise over to gorgeous Glencoe for a drive around Loch Leven, before ending our day at the foot of Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis.
Loch Lomond

Especially with the rare appearance from the sun, Loch Lomond was stunningly beautiful. Mountains and lakes and clouds, infinite shades of blue and green.. We found a picture-perfect spot to stretch our legs, complete with a rocky beach and waterfall flowing into the lake, and unskillfully skipped some stones.
Oban

Next stop, the little harbor town of Oban, and we were struck by the charm and beauty of it all. Finally finding a parking spot, we walked along the harbor towards the distillery, mouths gaping from the perfect combination of sea vessels, mountains, water, people, and sun…
Distillery

Smoke, sea salt, citrus, honey, the “flavors of Oban..” The only ingredients: premium barley, local water, yeast. The barley is ground to grist, baked with a small amount of peat for light smoke, then mixed with water until porridge. Yeast is added, as well as some water, and it begins to bubble. At this point, the mixture is basically 8.5% ABV beer. The next step is the distillation, and only the middle of the batch is used, with the first and last of batch re-distilled. Next stop is white oak bourbon barrels from Kentucky, where it ages for 14 years!
